Ricky Weisskopf '08
Bates College sophomore Ricky Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador) won his first match at the College Squash Association Individual Championships last weekend at Amherst College, cementing his All-America status for the second straight year.Seeded 14th in the Men's Potter Division, or A Draw, Weisskopf downed No. 20 William Cheng of Cornell University in the opening round, 9-1, 9-2, 6-9, 9-0, to reach the ranks of the top 16 players in the nation -- one round better than Bates' first All-American fared last season.

Weisskopf then lost to No. 4 Shaun Johnstone of Trinity, 9-4, 9-1, 9-2, putting him in the second-round consolation bracket, where he lost to Trinity's Sahil Vora 9-3, 9-5, 9-0.

Kathryn Moore '07
Bates junior Kathryn Moore ran her first indoor 5,000-meter race at last weekend's Trinity Last Chance track and field meet, held at Yale University. And she did it so well that it nearly earned her a trip to nationals.Moore, a team co-captain from Pelham, N.H., covered the distance in 17:33.09, the third fastest time in Bates history. Her time bettered the provisional qualifying time for this weekend's NCAA Division III championships.

But although she would have easily made the cut for nationals a year ago, it was a far more crowded field this year, and Moore, also a standout cross-country runner for Bates, missed the final cut.
