Bobcats of the week of Nov. 7, 2005

Steve Monsulick '07
Although most of the top-flight runners in the Northeast were held out of Saturday's ECAC cross country championships, that didn't stop Bates junior Steve Monsulick (Kents Hill, Maine) from achieving a breakthrough performance, shaving a second off the 8-kilometer course record at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Conn., with a time of 25:19, 29 seconds ahead of second-place Ryan Wells of SUNY Oneonta.Monsulick's race affirmed his standing alongside Bates' top runner, senior Dan Johnson (Detroit Lakes, Minn.), as a candidate to qualify for the NCAA Division III championships.

Monsulick headed the list of four Bates runners who earned All-ECAC honors. Joining him on the team were sophomore Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Conn.), who finished fifth overall in 26:05; sophomore Andrew Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.), who was 12th overall in 26:17; and senior Matt Biggart (Cheshire, Conn.), who was 14th overall in 26:18.

Jen Marino '09
It was an inspiring, complete team effort that allowed the Bates women's soccer team to gain its first NESCAC championship on Sunday. But with the score against top-seeded Tufts knotted at 1-all for 78 minutes, somebody had to put the ball in the back of the Jumbos' net for the celebrating to become possible. That somebody was first-year forward Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.), who becomes the first first-year athlete to be named Bobcat of the Week in the 2005-06 school year.

Marino, a reserve left wing for the Bobcats (13-3-1), was also named NESCAC Player of the Week on Monday. She collected her first career game-winning goal, and her fourth of the season. by pursuing a free ball as it headed toward Tufts goaltender Annie Ross. Ross was unable to control the ball, and Marino's hustle put her in place to volley the ball over Ross and into the goal.

Bates (13-3-1) advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament, where it will face Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday in the first round at Tufts.
