Bobcats of the week of Oct. 17, 2005

Todd Wilcox '08
Though he's only a sophomore, Bates inside linebacker Todd Wilcox (Brentwood, N.H.) took the reins of the Bobcats' defense in its 30-29 overtime victory over Wesleyan last Saturday. The 6-0, 215-pound Wilcox was everywhere in the game, particularly quarterback Zach Librizzi's facemask. Wilcox sacked Librizzi three times and recorded 1.5 other tackles for losses, among his total of 13 on the day, tied for the team lead with fellow linebacker Ron DiGravio (Farmington, Maine). This, following another outstanding performance in Bates' 8-7 loss at Williams the week before, when he forced a fumble and recorded a sack to go with seven tackles.

In the Wesleyan win, Wilcox also broke up a pass and made perhaps the biggest defensive play of the day for Bates, on a day full of them. Wesleyan was ahead 13-0 in the second quarter and threatening to pad its lead, having driven to the Bates 26, when Wilcox picked off Librizzi's pass at the Bates 4.

"That really changed the momentum of the game for us," Bates head coach Mark Harriman said of the play.

Sarah Judice '06
Junior goalkeeper Sarah Judice (Granby, Conn.) took the Bates field hockey on her back last week as the Bobcats went 2-1, the only loss coming against nationally ranked Bowdoin.Judice had six saves in Bates' 3-0 victory at the University of Southern Maine on Oct. 16, and against Bowdoin on Oct. 12 she helped keep the Bobcats in the game, making 10 saves, while the Polar Bears outshot the Bobcats 25-7.

But Bates' signature win of the season came on Oct. 15 against Wesleyan in a game played at Trinity College. With Bates 3-6 entering the contest and Wesleyan 7-2, Judice made 17 saves as Bates pulled off a 2-1 win in overtime, with both goals being scored by sophomore forward Erin Chandler (Thornton, Pa.).

The win, coming despite Wesleyan's 27-11 edge in shots on goal, ended a three-game skid against NESCAC teams.

"Sarah has played huge for us lately," said Bates head coach Wynn Hohlt. "This weekend was so big for us. It really lifts our confidence."
