Ben Stein '09
Bates sophomore Ben Stein(Pelham, N.Y.) was an integral part of the Bobcats' men's tennis team's first head-to-head victory over Bowdoin since 1999, a 5-4 decision on April 4 inside Merrill Indoor Gymnasium.Stein teamed up with first-year Max Berger(Concord, N.H.) at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Polar Bear duo of Jamie Neely and Garrett Gates 8-5, then proceeded to defeat Alex Caughron at No. 2 singles by a 6-4, 6-0 score.

Stein has been arguably the team's most valuable player so far this year. Through seven dual matches for the Bobcats (4-3), currently ranked sixth in the Northeast, he is 7-0 in singles play, mostly at the No. 2 position, and 5-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Katie Franklin '07
Senior co-captain Katie Franklin's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning capped the Bates softball team's seventh-inning comeback for a 4-3 win Saturday at Trinity. Franklin's hit scored sophomore Val Beckwith(Woburn, Mass.) and junior Beth Lakin(Tacoma, Wash.) to give the Bobcats a split of the teams' doubleheader, after they trailed the Bantams 3-0 heading into the final inning.Franklin (New Preston, Conn.), a two-time First Team All-NESCAC outfielder, was 2-for-5 in the two games with two walks, one run scored and the two RBIs. She leads Bates (4-7, 2-3 NESCAC East Division) with a .472 on-base percentage and is hitting .379 with one home run and nine RBIs through 11 games.
