Bates first-year Rich McNeil(Lawrence, Mass.) continued his outstanding rookie year on the track and field team last weekend at the ECAC Division III Track and Field Championships at SUNY Oneonta.McNeil was a surprise fifth-place finisher in the hammer throw on Thursday with a top throw of 157-02. The following day he heaved the discus 149 feet and 10 inches for second place, behind only Nick Orfanella of Lebanon Valley (152-11) for the title.
McNeil learned on Sunday that he made the field to compete at the NCAA Championships next week in the discus throw, where he'll join junior teammate Noah Gauthier (Amherst, N.H.), who will compete in the hammer throw.
McNeil will be one of only three first-year throwers in the discus throw competition at nationals.

Bates last week earned its first bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Rowing Championships.
