Bobcats of the week of Oct 2, 2006

Matt Gregg '10
Anyone who thought the Bates passing attack would be too one-dimensional this season, with Dylan MacNamarathe only returning wide receiver with more than two catches last season, had to find first-year Matt Gregg'sperformance encouraging.Gregg (Milton, Mass.) caught seven passes from Brandon Colon for 99 yards, including a 43-yard connection that set up a field goal in the second quarter.

It was the top performance by a rookie receiver in head coach Mark Harriman's eight-plus seasons at Bates. Gregg caught one pass for 12 yards in the season opener at Amherst.

Six of Gregg's receptions occurred in the first half, when the Bobcats scored all 12 of their points.

Katie Graeff '07
As the captain of a very young Bates volleyball team -- seven out of 11 players on the roster are first-years -- Graeff is instrumental in the Bobcats' continuous improvement. In five matches over Bates' 2-3 week, Graeff averaged 7.95 assists per game, 2.75 digs per game and 0.45 blocks per game. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Bates College Invitational.

Bates was 2-2 in the tournament, and the losses were as encouraging as the wins: the Bobcats (8-10) took a game from defending NESCAC champion Colby, and won two games against 12-3 Bowdoin.
