The Bates College rowing crews made strong showings over the weekend at the 42nd Head of the Charles Regatta, and perhaps most impressive of all was the women's varsity eight. In the Collegiate Women’s Eight division, Bates finished 13th overall out of 57 boats, with a time of 17:55.737, only 4.91 percent off of Yale University’s winning mark of 17:05.343. Bates was third among American Division III schools, and ahead of rivals such as Colby (15th), Tufts (16th), Trinity (18th), William Smith (21st) and Hamilton (25th).
The lineup in the Bates boat was Charlotte Coulter '09 (coxswain), Gabby Voeller '07,Nicole Ritchie '09, Cait Murphy '09, Alexia Zhang '10, Jackie Olson '07, Laura Hubbell'09, Laura Director '08, and Jeanethe Falvey'07.
"The women raced really aggressively," said co-interim head coach Anne Lewis. "It was Charlotte's first time racing on the Charles, a course notorious for its tight turns and bridges, and she did a terrific job of consistently putting our crew on the fastest line. We're particularly pleased to have posted a time that automatically qualifies Bates for the event next year. Hopefully, this momentum will carry through the winter and into the spring, as we gear up for our primary racing season."
Bates’ crews will be at the CBB Regatta this Saturday, Oct. 28, at Colby.
