With each successive game thus far in the young college basketball season, Bates first-year forward/guard Brian Ellishas scored more points than the contest before. That continuous progress resulted in the jewel the 6-foot-5 native of Braintree, Mass., submitted on Saturday night. 8-11 from the field, including 3-4 from behind the arc, Ellis scored a game-high 22 points with 8 rebounds, as the Bobcats eked out a 66-65 non-league win over Bowdoin.With another one-point victory to their credit last week (62-61 over Endicott), the Bobcats went 2-0. Meanwhile, Ellis scored 20.5 points and grabbed 7.5 rebounds per game, shooting 13-22 from the field (.591), including 5-7 from three-point range (.714), and .833 at the foul line.

The Bates women's swimming and diving team received a key contribution fromCharlotte Green'11 in Saturday's 148.5-134.5 dual meet victory over Trinity, the Bobcats' first of the young season.Green (New Canaan, Conn.) went undefeated, with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (25.95 seconds), the 100-yard freestyle (56.41 seconds) and both relays (1:56.51 in the 200 medley relay and 1:47.26 in the 200 freestyle relay). In the 50 free she nipped Trinity's Emma Goehring by merely .02 seconds, exhibiting the kind of poise coach Peter Casares referred to when he commented, "I felt the women were in total control of the whole meet. They came out aggressive and continued to win one close race after another."
Green and her Bobcat teammates will swim at Bowdoin College on Wednesday, starting at 6 p.m.
