Men's Rowing '08
The Bates rowing teams opened the year's racing Sunday at the newly minted Quinsigamond Snake Regatta with first-place performances on both the men's and women's sides. The Snake is a new collegiate only chase that drew teams from some of New England's finest rowing programs, including five of the NESCACs.The Bates First Varsity Men -- James Grant '10, Brian Klein '09, Dylan Eberle '08, Jonathan Blanchard '08, Tim Henderson '09, Glenn Kelly '10, Brad Sherman '08, Charlie Biddle '09 and Christian Ford '08(coxswain) -- won the Men's Eights event in 13:56, seven seconds over runner-up WPI. The Bobcat Second Varsity (Eugene Kim '08, Dan LaFontaine '10, Matt Boller '08, Drew Hagstrum '08, Graham Proud '08, Cory Sanderson '10, Andrew Toplyn '08, Graham Pearson '10 and Lindsay Thomson '10[coxswain]) finished sixth in 15:21 and the Novice placed 13th in 16:51. Crews from Boston College, Colby, Tufts, Holy Cross, Williams, USMMA, and Clark each had multiple crews to round out the field of 20.

Women's Rowing '08
If there was any question whether the Bates women's rowing team would continue to be the real deal following last spring's third-place finish at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, the Bobcats laid them to rest on Sunday at the inaugural Quinsigamond Snake Regatta in Worcester, Mass.With all women's eights running in the same event, the three Bates entries finished first, third and 16th in a 21-crew field. The First Varsity crew -- Alexia Zhang '10, Alison Frye '10, Rebecca Waldo '11, Elizabeth Martin '10, Emily Howieson '08, Emily Chandler '09, Laura Hubbell '09, Caitlin Murphy '09and Nora Collins '11 (coxswain) -- won the 2.5-mile event in 16:09, seven seconds over second-place Holy Cross A crew, while the Bobcat Second Varsity (Kara Constantine '08, Anne Connell '10, Ellen Patterson '11, Josie Cutts '09, Danica Doroski '10, Molly Newton '11, Hannah Richardson '11, Kirsten Laaspere '11 and Rachel Tofel '10[coxswain]) was only another six seconds back in 16:22. The Novice struggled with equipment problems but still bested five crews in a time of 20:16. Colby, WPI, Tufts, Conn College, Clark, and Assumption all had multiple entries to round out the field.
