|Men's 2V Eight '11
The Bates men's rowing team got the spring season off to a very impressive start at the 38th annual San Diego Crew Classic over the weekend, highlighted by the team's second varsity eight winning the Collegiate 2V Division's Petite Final on Sunday.The Bates 2V8 defeated an otherwise all-California field of six boats in the Men's Collegiate 2V Petite Final, covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:26.40 to edge UC Davis (6:28.42) for first place. Rounding out the field were Orange County (6:31.52), UC Santa Barbara (6:37.81), UC Irvine (6:42.91) and UC Santa Clara (6:54.06).
The day before, competing in the Men's Collegiate 2V A race for the Sharp Cabrillo Cup, the Bates 2V8 took fifth place out of seven boats, trailing Stanford, Cal, Notre Dame and UC Davis but nipping Orange County (6:30.96) and UC San Diego (6:33.62).
The men's second varsity eight comprises Jon Frye '14 (Duxbury, Mass.), Sam MacGregor '14 (Princeton, N.J.), Caleb Glassman '14 (Radnor, Pa.), Hank Schless '14 (Old Greenwich, Conn.), Harry Chung '11 (Naperville, Ill.), Jake Harwood '14 (Hopkinton, N.H.), Charlie Carey'13 (Lincoln, Mass.), stroke Gar Ditz '14 (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and coxswain Jake Sandor '14 (Montclair, N.J.).
|Women's Varsity Eight '11
The Bates women's rowing team wanted to do well on its trip to the San Diego Crew Classic, as the lone Division III squad at the prestigious regatta. But the team could hardly have expected to do as well as it did.On Saturday, the Bates women's varsity eight, competing for the SeaWorld Cal Cup in the women's collegiate varsity C division, were in the thick of a Division I field, and took third out of five boats in a time of 6:54.68, trailing only Tulsa (6:48.1) and Alabama (6:48.91), and crossing the finish line well ahead of Southern Methodist (7:04.06) and the University of British Columbia (7:13.98).
The boat moved on to Sunday's Petite Final and came away the winner among six boats. Their time of 6:52.90 nipped the University of Victoria (6:53.89), and was followed by Drexel (6:55.10), San Diego State, St. Mary's and Southern Methodist.
In the boat's two races, the Bobcats defeated seven out of nine boats, losing only to the eventual top two finishers in the Grand Final, Tulsa and Alabama.
