The Bates women's swimming and diving team grabbed headlines with its first dual-meet victory against rival Bowdoin since 2003, a resounding 193-107 score on Saturday at Tarbell Pool. The men's team didn't win the team scoring against the Polar Bears, but swam impressively nevertheless -- none more so than first-year Won Ho Chang(Seoul, Korea).Chang won the 200-yard butterfly race in a time of 1:55.69, the fastest ever by a Bates swimmer. Chang sliced a hundredth of a second off of David Fox's record that stood for nearly 18 years. The performance also broke the pool record held by Middlebury since 2006.
Chang also captured first place in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 4:54.61. The rookie standout has already pulled off two individual wins in dual meets this season against Maine and Middlebury.
