Currently ranked 14th among all men's singles players in Division III tennis, Bates sophomoreMatt Bettles(Taunton, England) backed up his burgeoning reputation last week.With the No. 23 nationally ranked Bobcats taking their annual swing through the mid-Atlantic, Bettles was perhaps the team's most impressive representative.
On Friday, Bates defeated 25th-ranked Mary Washington by a convincing 7-2 score. Bettles defeated Sam Wichlin, the No. 7-ranked player in the NCAA Atlantic South Region, by a 6-4, 6-2 score, after he and sophomore teammateRob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.) wiped out the fourth-ranked doubles team in the Atlantic South, Wichlin and Kaz Murata, 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Though Bettles had his singles and doubles win streaks come to an end at four matches apiece in Sunday's 8-1 loss to No. 13 Johns Hopkins, Bettles took Andrew Wang, the No. 8-ranked player in the Atlantic South, to a tiebreaker before falling in two sets.
On Monday, Bates faced Kalamazoo College in a neutral-site match at Swarthmore, squeaking past the Hornets, ranked ninth in the Central Region, by a 5-4 score. Bettles and Crampton again set the tone at No. 1 doubles, with an 8-5 win over Mark Denenfeld and Nate Eddy. Bettles then notched a needed win in straight sets at first singles over Eddy, ranked 14th among singles players in the Central Region.

Bates junior outfielderKaren Ullmann(Ramsey, N.J.) got off to a great start for the Bobcat softball team last Thursday, as the team opened the season with a pair of wins over Macalester and Berry. Ullmann tripled in both games and collected a combined five runs scored, three hits, two stolen bases and a run batted in.By the end of Bates' three-day, six-game stint at the National Training Center Tournament in Clermont, Fla., Ullmann was at the top of the list among several strong hitting performances by the Bobcats. She is hitting .500 (9-for-18) with three triples and a double, and currently leads the team in slugging percentage (.889), runs scored (8), walks (2) and stolen bases (4-for-4).
Bates is off to its best start, at 4-2, since the 1999 season, when the team also started 4-2 and eventually won eight of its first 10 games.
