Entering the game with 14 career receptions and two touchdowns, Bates junior split end John Squires(Swampscott, Mass.) caught nine passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns as Bates defeated Tufts for the first time since 1985, 21-20.In the second quarter of the game, the 6-foot-7 Squires had a 47-yard reception on a 3rd and-27 to keep alive a drive that ended with his 8-yard TD catch, which gave Bates a 12-10 lead. In the third quarter, with Bates trailing 20-12 and facing 4th-and-6 at the Tufts 31, Squires hauled in his second touchdown from junior quarterback Ryan Katon (Middletown, Conn.) while falling out of bounds to close the gap to 20-18. It was his second fourth-down conversion in the 15-play, 71-yard drive.
Six of Squires catches resulted in first downs for Bates. Two of those were fourth-down conversions, and three others were third-and-long situations (3rd/27, 3rd/6, 3rd/9).

Bates junior forwardLyndsay Beaton(West Newbury, Mass.) scored single goals in both her rookie and sophomore seasons with the Bates field hockey team. But this season she has asserted herself as the team's top scorer, and one of its most consistent performers as well.Beaton scored a goal in Bates' game at UMaine-Farmington last Wednesday, and she assisted on sophomore Michelle Brady's (Milton, Mass.) goal in Saturday's setback at No. 2 nationally ranked Tufts. Beaton has scored points in five out of seven games this season, including goals against three nationally ranked NESCAC opponents in Amherst, Bowdoin and Trinity.
