Several players on the Bates College men's tennis team fared very well over the weekend at the ITA New England Division III Championships, none more so than sophomoreMatt Bettles(Taunton, England).Bettles defeated the top seed in the singles semifinals of the tournament on Sunday, before bowing out in the finals to Felix Sun of Williams.
The sixth seed in the tournament, Bettles defeated top-seeded Andy Peters of Middlebury in the semifinals on Sunday morning by a 7-5, 7-6(2) score. It was his third victory against a seeded opponent in the tournament, including one over the top seed and another against the No. 3 seed, Mark Kahan of Amherst.
Bettles, who made it as far as the Round of 16 in the same tournament a year ago, met Sun in the finals, where the Ephs sophomore prevailed by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
On Saturday, Bettles defeated Bryan Chow of Williams, a second-tier seed, in the Round of 16 by a 6-1, 6-3 score, then went on to beat third-seeded Mark Kahan of Amherst in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
The second-tier seeded (5-8) doubles pairing of first-year Tim Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) and Bettles played No. 3 seeds Mark Kahan and Luis Rattenhuber of Amherst and bowed out, 8-2, in Saturday's quarterfinal round. On Friday they teamed up to defeat Paul Kohnstamm and Pat Monaghan of Tufts 8-3, then rolled past Diego Angel and Harris Rollinger of Clark 8-5.

The Bates volleyball team had a successful trip to the Big Apple over the weekend, going 3-1 at the NYU Violet Invitatational, including 3-2 wins over CCNY and Hunter, to raise their record to 5-6.Sophomore middle blocker Eliza Pyne(Atherton, Calif.) tallied 2.18 kills per game (second on the team to Nicole Russell's 2.29) while leading the Bobcats in attack percentage (.269) and blocks (0.47 per set), meanwhile picking up 1.00 digs per set and serving at a .960 percentage with six aces.
After the team lost many of its front-row players of a year ago, Pyne is holding the fort down, leading the team in kills (100) and blocks (22).
