Senior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) followed up Friday’s sixth-place finish in the 10K Freestyle by claiming 12th place out of 92 competitors in Saturday’s 10K Classic Mass Start race at the Bates Carnival, leading the Bobcat women to another strong day at fifth place out of 12 teams.
Taylor recorded a time of in 14:53.0 in Friday's 10K Freestyle race -- which doubled as the Chummy Broomhall Cup for the Maine state championship -- to claim the women's Broomhall title and help lead Bates to its first Broomhall Cup since 2007. Taylor was an impressive sixth place overall in the race.
Bates wrested this year’s cup away from Colby in the closest championship to date. Led by Taylor, Bates placed three in the top four of the women’s race. Bates then held on in the men’s race, led by race winner Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska).
The Broomhall Cup is also used to select Maine’s Collegiate All-State Team. The first five men and women from Maine colleges comprised the First Team All-State, and the second five comprised the Second Team.
From the Bates women’s team, Taylor, first-year Hallie Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) and junior Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) earned First Team All-State recognition, and sophomore Andrea Fisher (Williamstown, Mass.) was named Second Team. Buetow headlined the Men’s First Team All-State, while junior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine), sophomore Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) and senior Jimmy Burnham (Carlisle, Mass.) were named to the Second Team.
