Senior righthanded pitcher Karl Alexander set Bates baseball's team record for career victories on Sunday, leading the Bobcats to a 7-6 win over Colby at Hadlock Field in Portland.
Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) held the Mules scoreless over eight innings before running into trouble in the ninth, but Bates held as Alexander climbed to the top of the team's all-time victories list. Alexander's win raised his record this season to 5-4 and his career mark to 16-14, moving him out of a tie with Mike Kinsman '05 for sole possession of the team record.
It was the second year in a row that Bates (21-15, 5-7 NESCAC East) has hosted a game at Hadlock Field, home of the Class AA Portland Sea Dogs. Both Alexander and the Bobcats are now 2-0 at the facility, following last year's win over Amherst.
The start was the 32nd of Alexander's career, tying him with former teammate Paul Chiampa '11 for the team record. With 40 appearances over four years, Alexander currently ranks third in that category, despite being used mainly as a starter.
The win was the sixth straight for Bates, the Bobcats' second six-game win streak this season.
