What a week for Bates senior Leah Maciejewski, who learned at the start of the week that she had won a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to teach English in Poland next year.
Excitement over the news may have played a part in her amazing doubleheader against Maine Maritime on Wednesday. The second-year team captain put the stamp on Bates' home opening sweep of the Mariners by hitting a grand slam to invoke the 8-run rule in Game 2, completing 6-for-6 day at the plate with nine runs batted in.
Even better, Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) played a key part in the Bobcats' three-game NESCAC East Division sweep of Colby over the weekend, including a solo home run that helped Bates win Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader by a 5-4 score.
While Bates went 5-0 on the week to raise its overall record to 10-6 and its conference record to 4-2, Maciejewski batted an astounding .750 (12-for-16) with a slugging percentage of 1.250. In the process, she raised her batting average this season to a pristine .500 and her slugging percentage to a team-high .761.
