Bates first-year phenom Avril Dunleavy led the Bobcats' women's alpine ski team to one of its best carnival weekends ever, with back-to-back second-place team showings among 13 women's alpine squads at the UVM Winter Carnival.
Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished sixth out of 68 competitors with a two-run combined time of 2:13.15 in Friday's giant slalom races at Mt. Mansfield, leading three Bates women who placed among the top 12 competitors, with first-year Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) ninth and junior captain Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) 12th.
Incredibly, Bates placed three among the top 12 again in Saturday's slalom races, but Dunleavy was the only common denominator, and she raised her standing to third place out of 72 competitors, with a two-run combined time of 1:50.94, including the best second-run of any competitor, at 55.23 seconds. First-year Emily Hayes (Natick, Mass.) had the best day of her young collegiate career, taking fourth place in 1:51.67. Sophomore Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) came in 12th at 1:54.41, just .11 outside of the top 10.
The women's team was second only to Dartmouth in Friday's giant slaloms, and second only to Williams in Saturday's slaloms.
