John Squires kept the train rolling on a terrific senior season -- and senior year, for that matter -- in the Bates men's basketball team's 1-1 NESCAC home weekend.
Squires (Swampscott, Mass.), who won First Team All-NESCAC Football honors at wide receiver in 2011, recorded his fourth straight double-double on Saturday afternoon, with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Most importantly, his last-second tip-in vaulted the Bobcats over visiting Trinity College by a 60-59 score, with Squires scoring Bates' final six points in the game.
The day before, in Bates' 67-54 loss to No. 6 nationally ranked Amherst, Squires posted 14 points and 12 rebounds. He now has 10 double-doubles this season, and seven in his past eight games. Squires' is the third-leading rebounder in the conference, with 9.5 boards per game, and also ranks among NESCAC leaders in scoring (12.3 ppg, tied with junior teammate Mark Brust for 12th) and blocked shots (0.85 bpg, ninth). Squires also leads the NESCAC in rebounding in conference games, with 10.9 boards per NESCAC game.
