Normally Bobcat of the Week is awarded to an individual athlete, but sometimes it's impossible to single out one team member over another. Such is the case this week after the Bates men's tennis team's impressive 3-0 road trip to Washington College, the University of Mary Washington and Johns Hopkins University.
In routing Washington 9-0, then beating both No. 16 nationally ranked Mary Washington and No. 4 Johns Hopkins, both by 7-2 scores and on consecutive days, the Bobcats showed they've found their groove. Particularly in doubles play: ranked 29th in Division III entering this week, but sure to move up significantly when Thursday's new rankings are released, Bates (4-4) has won four straight matches, and each time the Bobcats have earned an enormous 3-0 advantage after the conclusion of doubles play.
Bates' No. 1 doubles team, junior Matt Bettles (Taunton, England) and Rob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.), won by an aggregate 24-10 score in the Bobcats' 3-0 week; the No. 2 duo, sophomore Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) and first-year Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.), outscored opponents 24-9. All four of these players went 3-0 in singles on the week as well. Bates' No. 3 doubles team, junior Kyle DeSisto (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomore Peter Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.), won by an aggregate 24-14 score on the week.
The Bobcats look to keep their momentum going this Saturday, when the red-hot women's team hosts Brandeis at 11am, followed by the men taking on the Judges at about 3pm.
