Bates senior Juliana Kirkland (Greene, Maine) competed for the last time in a Bates uniform at last week's ECAC Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and Kirkland made sure it was a memorable outing.
The senior from nearby Greene, Maine, finished eighth in the hammer throw, to earn All-ECAC honors and score a team point for Bates, with a career-best mark of 46.95 meters, or 154 feet and 0.25 inches.
Kirkland's effort lifted her into fifth place on Bates' all-time performance list in the hammer, less than a month after she entered the Top 10 list for the first time in her career. She also won some all-important family bragging rights, too: one of the four former Bobcats she passed on the way to No. 5 was her sister, Cassandra Kirkland '08.
Juliana Kirkland will also follow in Cassandra Kirkland's footsteps as an inductee into the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society on Saturday.
