Saturday's Bates Indoor Track & Field Invitational brought Division I Maine and five other Division III teams to Merrill Indoor Gymasium last Saturday, and also marked another highlight of David Pless's career.
In just the second meet of his junior year, Pless, the 2011 NCAA Division III indoor shot put champion, broke his own school record with an effort of 56-10, leading the Bates men’s track and field team to second place out of seven teams, behind only Division I Maine, on Saturday at Merrill Indoor Gymnasium.
Pless (Atlanta, Ga.) had a top effort of 17.32 meters, or 56 feet and 10 inches, surpassing by four inches the Bates record he set in winning the NCAA title last March. Pless's mark currently ranks him third in Division III this indoor season. The Bates junior also won the weight throw with a personal-record distance of 58-2, the 12th-best mark in Division III so far.
