Bates sophomore Hallie Grossman demonstrated that she ranks among the finest women's Nordic skiers in the East last weekend at the St. Lawrence Carnival in Lake Placid, N.Y., as she followed up her precocious rookie season with a pair of top 10 finishes at Mt. Van Hoevenburg.
It was a big weekend all in all for Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams, which scored 549.5 team carnival points, more than enough for fifth place among 16 teams there. Colby was sixth with 474.5. Bates last finished fifth at the 2012 UVM Carnival.
The Bates women’s team had a terrific day on Saturday, placing fourth among 13 women’s squads in the women’s 3K prologue. Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) had her second top-10 finish in as many days, taking 10th place out of 88 racers with a time of 9:29.3. First-years Margaret Pope (McCall, Idaho) and Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) were 14th (9:35.2) and 19th (9:42.8), respectively, to finish Bates’ scoring on the day.
In Friday's women's 15K freestyle race, Grossman finished eighth overall covered the course in 42:33.8. Following her in Bates’ scoring were McLarney in 20th at 44:30.6 and Pope in 21st at 44:38.8. Junior newcomer Gabby Naranja (Fort Kent, Maine) came in 32nd overall in 45:30.7.
Bates competes at the Colby Carnival this weekend, with Nordic races at Quarry Road Recreation Area in Waterville.
