Senior captain Katherine Cook crossed the finish line first as the No. 25 nationally ranked Bates women's cross country team finished second to No. 11 Tufts while outscoring WPI and Wellesley on Saturday at the Bates Invitational, held at Pineland Farms.

Cook (South Burlington, Vt.) finished the 5-kilometer course in 18:10.3, a 5:50.9 pace per mile, 5.8 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Tufts senior Brittany Bowman, capturing her first career win in a collegiate cross country race.

With the top 10 runners from each team counting towards team scores, Tufts, ranked fourth in the New England Region in Division III, scored 114 points. Bates, ranked fifth in New England, came second with 168 points, although the Bobcats would have edged Tufts 31-32 in the traditional cross-country scoring format, with five scorers and two displacers.
