LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College's alpine and Nordic skiing teams will send a total of five athletes to the NCAA Collegiate Skiing Championships, which Bates is hosting on March 11-14.

From the Bates alpine team, two women will be represented at NCAAs. Senior Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) will make her fourth trip to nationals, the first Bates female alpine skier to do so. Thompson finished the regular season as the 19th-ranked women's alpine skier on the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association circuit. Her top performance of the season came in last weekend's Colby Carnival, when she finished eighth out of 56 competitors in the slalom competition.

Sophomore Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) will make her second trip to NCAAs in as many years. Holland ranked 21st on the EISA circuit this year; her best day of the season came in the season-opening Bates Carnival at Sunday River, when she placed 11th in the slalom.

From the Bates Nordic team, senior Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) will make his fourth trip in as many years, and attempt to add to his one All-America award, earned last year when he finished fourth in the 10K Free Technique race in Bozeman, Mont.

Joining Ellefson is senior teammate Sam Evans-Brown (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.), who will make his first trip to NCAAs after an exceptional senior season in which he ranked 11th on the EISA circuit. Evans-Brown finished fifth in both the Free and Classical Technique races at the Bates Carnival at Black Mountain in Rumford.

The 2009 NCAA Skiing Championships are the sixth NCAA championship event hosted by Bates, which last welcomed the skiing event in 1999.

Rounding out the Bates contingent is Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.), who becomes the first Bates women's Nordic skier to make NCAAs since Kaitlyn McElroy '07 in 2006. Ruppertsberger had a breakthrough sophomore season and ranked 11th in the East, highlighted by a third-place finish in the classical technique race at the Middlebury Carnival.
