Duncan, Mahan honored as Bates athletes of the year

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College Department of Athletics gave out its end-of-the-year awards Sunday evening at the Senior Athletes BBQ, held in the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building.

Seniors Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan and Kush Mahan were named the Female and Male Athletes of the Year, among a number of outstanding candidates.

Duncan (Topsham, Maine), who will be competing in the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships for the sixth time in her career this weekend, is a five-time All-American thrower who was the national runner-up in the weight throw at the 2010 NCAA indoor championships in March, before placing seventh in the shot put. Other highlights from this academic year include four New England Division III titles, two NESCAC titles and one ECAC Division III crown.

Mahan (Kalamazoo, Mich.) put an exclamation point on an already outstanding playing career on the men's squash team at Bates with his superlative senior season, which earned him NESCAC Co-Player of the Year honors. Mahan was 18-4 in dual play in his second year at the No. 1 spot in 2009-10, including an 11-0 mark against NESCAC opponents. Mahan defeated such top opponents as Gabriel de Melo of Franklin & Marshall, Supreet Singh of Trinity and Ethan Buchsbaum of Williams. He finished his career with a 61-25 individual record.

Both Duncan and Mahan were repeat NESCAC All-Academic selections this year, as well.

Receiving the Senior Sportsmanship Award were Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) and Sarah Reingold (Oakland, Calif.). Beaton was a team captain on Bates' football and baseball teams this academic year, and also won NESCAC All-Conference honors in both sports (as a wide receiver in football and as a shortstop in baseball). Reingold is a four-year varsity letter winner on the Bates women's swimming and diving team and served as a team captain in the 2009-10 season. One of the highlights of Reingold's athletic career was helping to set the team record in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
