LEWISTON, Maine -- The weekend ahead for Bates winter athletics teams includes the final home games of the regular season for the men's and women's basketball teams, including a visit from an old friend.
Former men's basketball head coach Joe Reilly returns to Alumni Gym for the first time on Friday night with his new team, the Wesleyan University Cardinals. Reilly led the Bobcats from the 1997-98 season through 2007-08, posting winning records over the last eight years of his tenure. After departing Bates to coach the Cardinals in his home state of Connecticut, Jon Furbush '05 was appointed Bates' new head coach. Furbush played for Reilly and was an assistant under Reilly for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
Friday night's game tips off a pair of NESCAC doubleheaders for the Bates basketball teams. The Bates women take on Wesleyan at 8 p.m., followed on Saturday afternoon with the men's team hosting Connecticut College at 2 p.m. and the women facing the Camels at 4 p.m. All of Bates' home basketball games can be followed via Live Stats and Live Video Webcast.
Saturday's games are the final home regular-season contests for men's team seniors Thomas Deegan (Weymouth, Mass.), Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.), Alex Gallant (Bangor, Maine) and Nick Schmiemann (Weymouth, Mass.). The women's game will be Bates fans' chance to see senior captains Jessie Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) and Christine McCall (Lowell, Mass.) take the floor at Alumni for one more game.
Bates squash stays at home this weekend as co-host of the Maine Round Robin with Bowdoin. On Friday night at 7 p.m., the 12th-ranked Bates men's team hosts Denison University at the Bates Squash Center (56 Alfred Plourde Parkway). On Saturday at 1 p.m., the No. 13 women's team as well as the Bates men play host to NESCAC rival Connecticut College. The men will face Boston College at 6 p.m. and Northwestern at 8 p.m. to cap the weekend. All matches are scheduled to feature Live Video Webcast.
The men's and women's track and field teams will both have select members competing Friday at the Terrier Classic at Boston University. On Saturday, both teams send full contingents to the USM Invitational in Gorham, Maine.
The alpine and Nordic ski teams have a weekend off of the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association carnival circuit, but the Nordic team will still compete at its home venue, Black Mountain in Rumford, on Sunday for the fifth annual Chummy Broomhall Cup, also known as the Maine Collegiate Championship. The Bobcats return to the EISA carnival circuit on Feb. 4-5 for the UVM Carnival at Stowe, Vt.
