Weekend Preview: Squash at NESCACs; track teams have state meets

Stephanie Cabot and the Bates squash teams head to Trinity College this weekend for the fifth annual NESCAC Championships.

All of Bates' winter athletic teams are in action this weekend, all away from Lewiston but many in arguably their most important competitions to date this season.

The Bates men's and women's squash teams head to Connecticut this weekend for the fifth NESCAC Championships, hosted by Trinity and Wesleyan.

The men (14-7, 4-3 NESCAC), ranked No. 13 in the country, are seeded third in the tournament, and have indeed finished third in all four previous years of the NESCACs. Bates will play the first-round winner between No. 6 Bowdoin and No. 11 Connecticut College in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity. Bates has defeated both potential opponents by 9-0 scores this season. A win would likely set up a rematch with No. 2 seed Williams.

The Bates women (11-8, 5-3 NESCAC), ranked 14th, are the fifth seed; in 2010, Bates finished third in the tournament for the third time in its four-year existence, beating Middlebury 6-3 in the consolation final. This year they'll play No. 4 seed Amherst in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Trinity, looking to avenge Amherst's 6-3 upset victory on Jan. 15. The winner is likely to play top-seeded Trinity in the semifinal round.

The Bates men's (12-9, 3-3 NESCAC) and women's (16-5, 4-2 NESCAC) basketball teams are now in the stretch run portion of the regular season. Both squads have three games left, all of them NESCAC contests, and they'll play two out of three of those this weekend. Friday night they're at Trinity, with the men tipping off at 6 p.m. at Trinity (11-9, 2-3 NESCAC) and the women at 8 p.m. against the host Bantams (12-7, 2-3 NESCAC). Both games can be followed on Live Stats at this link.

On Saturday both teams face the iron of the conference in Amherst. The men tip off against the No. 5-ranked Lord Jeffs (18-0, 5-0 NESCAC) at 2 p.m., followed by the women taking on No. 2-ranked Amherst (19-1, 5-0 NESCAC) at 4 p.m. Live Stats and Video of both games can be found at this link.

The Bates men's and women's indoor track and field teams both have the Maine State Indoor Championships taking place this weekend. Friday night beginning at 6 p.m., the Bates women are in their highly competitive state meet at the University of Southern Maine. On Saturday at 6 p.m. the Bates men compete in their state meet at Bowdoin.

The swimming and diving teams are at NESCAC opponent Connecticut College on Saturday. Wellesley will make it a three-team meet for the women. It'll be the penultimate meet for the Bobcats before the NESCAC Championships.
