The Bates Sports Medicine Physicians and Staff (Dr Paul Cain, Orthopedics, Dr Paige Picard, General Medicine, ATC’s) have the final responsibility to determine when a student-athlete is removed or withheld from participation due to an injury, illness, or pregnancy.
In addition, clearance for that individual to return to activity is solely the responsibility of the Bates Sports Medicine Physicians or their designated representative (Dr Peter Sedgwick).
During Academic Breaks and/or the unavailability of Dr Cain or Dr Picard for follow up and/or clearances Dr Peter Sedgwick will be the designated Physician to be seen. Dr Sedgwick will be in communication with Dr Cain and Dr Picard to ensure that the best interest of the student-athlete is being adhered to.
Bates Athletic Trainers will work closely and in conjunction with Bates Physicians as part of a team concept in providing the best care possible for student-athletes.
At Bates College, participation in athletics is a privledge and not a right. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the Sports Medicine Staff to ensure a safe return of all student-athletes from injury, illness, or pregnancy. This process is in the best interest of both the student-athlete(s) and Bates College.
Student-athletes have the right to seek medical attention outside of the Bates Sports Medicine umbrella. However, prior to returning to participation the student-athlete must present all documentation and note of clearance from the Physician seen to the supporting ATC. The student-athlete will need to follow up with one of the Bates Sports Medicine Physicians for final clearance back to participation/sport. The Physician seen will be determined by specialty.
