Men's alpine team excels at Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH SKIWAY, N.H. -- The Bates men's alpine team rode solid performances in both Friday and Saturday's slalom races, highlighting the alpine team's weekend at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.
Bates' combined ski teams scored 478.5 points to finish sixth in the Carnival, just behind St. Lawrence (488) and ahead of Williams (459.5) and Colby (448).
Junior Dan Loman (Killington, Vt.) led four Bobcat men in the top 25 in Saturday's slalom races with a two-run combined time of 1:38.66, good for 13th place out of 60 racers. Junior Leo Menard (Portland, Maine), senior Carter Casner (North Kingstown, R.I.) and junior Kevin Berry (Portsmouth, N.H.) were 16th, 18th and 25th, respectively, as the Bates men were fifth out of 10 teams for the second straight day.
Casner led the Bobcats in Friday's slaloms, with a combined time of 1:43.07 for 18th place. Menard was 21st, while senior James Pelletier (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) and Berry were 33rd and 34th.
Sophomore Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.) led the women's team in Friday's slalom, finishing 17th out of 57 competitors with a combined time of 1:44.49. Junior Whitney Fahy (Carrabbassett Valley, Maine) and first-year Allison Martini (Fair Haven, N.J.) were 25th and 26th, while junior Melissa Jones (Plymouth, N.H.) and sophomore Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) finished 35th and 36th, respectively.
Sampson was 19th for Bates in Saturday's slalom, one place ahead of Papineau. Sophomore Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) was 22nd and Jones came in 33rd.
Bates competes next weekend at the Williams College Winter Carnival.
