HANCOCK, Mass. -- The Bates College alpine ski team placed fifth on both the men's and women's sides in the slaloms on Saturday, the final day of the Williams College Winter Carnival.
Bates' alpine and Nordic teams combined to place seventh out of 11 teams at the carnival. With 471.5 points, Bates was edged by Colby (478.5) for sixth place. Dartmouth won with 617 points.
Junior Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) took sixth place with a combined time of 1:38.04 to lead the Bates women's squad. Junior Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) placed 16th out of 57 competitors in the event, and first-year Brittany Hastings had the best day of her young career, tying for 21st place.
On the men's side, senior Leo Menard (Portland, Maine) placed 10th out of 54 competitors, followed closely behind by first-years Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) and Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) in 13th and 14th places, respectively.
Bates senior Dan Loman (Killington, Vt.) placed 15th out of 59 competitors in the Men's Giant Slalom on Friday to lead the Bates men. After Loman came Menard in 27th place, with Brockman, Manter and first-year John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) in 35th, 36th and 37th, respectively.
The Bates women's alpine squad finished sixth out of 10 teams in the Women's Giant Slalom. Senior Whitney Fahy (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) led the Bobcats with a two-run combined time of 1:47.16, placing 21st out of 58 competitors. Close behind her were Thompson in 23rd, first-year Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) in 26th and Sampson in 27th.
Next up for Bates is the EISA Championships/Middlebury Carnival next weekend.
