Alpine team finishes strong at UVM Carnival







STOWE, Vt. -- The Bates alpine team wrapped up the UVM Carnival with the men’s and women’s slalom runs on Saturday. Bates' combined Nordic and alpine ski teams finished the carnival in seventh place out of 11 teams, with 586 points, just 10 points behind sixth-place Colby.

Senior tri-captains, Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine), Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) and Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.) led the way for the Bobcats. Thompson placed 15th with a combined time of 2:02.37. Sampson was the second Bobcat to finish in 18th place (2:04.68) with Papineau finishing 21st (2:05.86).

The Bates women finished in seventh place (69 points) out of 11 teams in the slalom holding a slight edge over Colby (63) and just trailing Williams (76).

The Bobcat men improved upon their giant slalom finish from yesterday (7th out of 10) with a fifth place team finish in the slalom today. A pair of sophomores led the way for the men’s alpine team with back-to-back finishes. Ben Manter ’11 (Vassalboro, Maine) and Ross Brockman ’11 (Sudbury, Mass.) finished 14th and 15th respectively with times of 1:48.01 and 1:48.15. First-year Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) rounded out the top three Bates skiers with a solid 21st place finish in a time of 1:53.56.

The Bobcats travel to the Dartmouth Winter Carnival next weekend at Dartmouth Skiway.
