Alpine teams off to an impressive start at the UVM Carnival







STOWE, Vt. -- The Bates alpine ski team kicked off the University of Vermont Carnival today with the men’s and women’s giant slalom races. The Bates women had an impressive first day with three skiers finishing in the top twenty-five.

Sophomore Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) led the women's team, placing 13th with a combined time of 2:01.81. Senior tri-captain Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.) followed close behind for a 15th-place finish (2:01.89) and first-year Kristen Waddle (Harpswell, Maine) rounded out the top three Bobcats with a 24th-place finish, at 2:02.71. Senior tri-captains Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) and Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) finished 27th and 31st, respectively.

The Bobcat women scored 72 points after the giant slalom races, which put them well ahead of Colby College (57) and just shy of Williams College (77).

The men’s alpine team was led by a pair of first-years with Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) finishing 21st with a combined time of 1:58.92, followed by Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) in 25th place with a time of 1:59.37. Sophomore Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) rounded out the Bobcats top three with a 35th place finish, 2:01.37.

The Bobcat men finished in seventh place out of 11 teams with 61 points tailing closely behind Colby College (68 points). The Bates team scored 133 points, which was good enough for 6th place out of eleven teams after today’s giant slalom events. Bates is hanging on to a tight lead over St. Lawrence (128) and Colby College (125).

The alpine team hits the slopes again for their final day of competition on Saturday for the sllaloms. The men begin the first slalom run at 9:30am followed directly afterward by the women. The alpine teams finish up the carnival with their second and final slalom run at 12:30pm with the men racing first followed directly afterward by the women.

The Bates Nordic team will also compete in their first event at the UVM Carnival on Saturday, Feb. 7th. The Nordic races will be held on a new race course at Trapp Family Lodge. The women start with the 5K Freestyle at 10:00am and the men follow with the 10K Freestyle scheduled to start at 12:15pm. The Nordic races culminate on Sunday, February 8th with the Women’s 10K Classic at 10:30am and the Men’s 15K Classic at 12:30pm.
