Nordic team off to an impressive start at the UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. -- The Bates Nordic ski team competed in their first of two days at the UVM Carnival in Stowe, Vermont. The Bobcat women made an impressive carnival debut placing three women in the top twenty of the women’s 5K freestyle. Sophomore Kristen Gill (Jackson, N.H.) led the way with a 15th-place finish (15:56.7). Teammates Sophie Leonard ’12 (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) and Natalie Ruppertsberger ’11 (Plainfield, N.H.) were not far behind finishing in 18th (16:04.9) and 19th (16:07.7) place respectively.

The women sit in sixth place (70 points) out of eleven teams after today’s event ahead of Williams (65) and trailing Colby (89).

The Bates men’s Nordic team was equally impressive in their first day at the UVM Carnival competing in the 10K freestyle. Senior captain Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.), fresh off his first-place finish in the 10K freestyle at the UNH Carnival last weekend, placed second in the event today with a time of 26:23.3. Fellow senior Sam Evans-Brown (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) continued his excellent skiing, coming in eighth in today’s race with a time of 27:00.0. Senior Tim Whiton (Portland, Maine) rounded out the top three skiers for the men with a solid showing in 28th place (28:25.8).

Behind the senior leadership of Ellefson, Evans-Brown and Whiton, the Bobcat men sit in second place (100 points) after today’s 10K freestyle, trailing only Dartmouth College (135).

The combined Bates Nordic and alpine ski teams are in sixth place out of 11 teams at the carnival, with 446 points. The Bobcats are sandwiched between Williams (488) and Colby (426) after the second day of the carnival.

The Bates Nordic teams wrap-up the UVM Carnival with the women’s 10K classic at 10:30am and the men’s 15K classic at 12:30pm on Sunday, Feb. 8th.
