Senior women lead alpine in slaloms at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. -- The Bates College alpine ski team's trio of senior women all placed in the top 18 Saturday in the slaloms at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.
Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished sixth out of 13 teams in the final standings in the carnival with 574.5 points, only half a point behind fifth-place Williams and 23.5 points ahead of rival Colby.
Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) placed 11th out of 55 competitors in the slaloms, with a two-run combined time of 1:41.96. Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) came in 17th at 1;43.13, and Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.) was 18th in 1:43.97, as the Bates women were fifth out of 10 teams in the event.
On the men's side, first-year Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) registered his second top-10 finish in as many days, recording a two-run combined time of 1:36.11 for 10th place out of 58 competitors. Sophomore Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) was 20th in 1:36.88 and sophomore Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) was 25th in 1:37.55, as the Bates men came in seventh as a unit in the event.
Bump Heldman finished ninth Friday in the men's giant slalom to lead the Bobcat alpine skiing teams on the first day of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.
Heldman had a two-run combined time of 1:50.09 to lead the Bates men to eighth place out of 10 teams in the event. Ben Manter was 40th out of 58 competitors with a time of 1:53.92, and sophomore John Canney came next in 44th at 1:54.86.
The Bates women's team had more consistent results, taking seventh place out of 10 teams in the GS. Both sophomore Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) and Megan Papineau placed among the top 20 in 17th and 20th, respectively, with two-run combined times of 1:54.90 and 1:55.30. Liz Thompson was 31st out of 55 competitors with a time of 1:57.26.
