HANOVER, Vt. -- On the final day of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival, junior John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) led the Bates men's alpine ski team with a 24th-place finish out of 56 racers in the giant slalom (1:50.51). Sophomore Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) followed up his fifth-place performance in the slalom yesterday with a 28th-place finish in the giant slalom (1:51.10). Junior Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) rounded out the top three finishers for the men, placing 37th (1:52.46).
The women were led by first-year Caitlin Forbes (Hanover, Maine), who raced to a 27th-place finish out of 52 competitors in the women's giant slalom (1:54.96). Sophomore Kristen Waddle (Harpswell, Maine) was only .21 seconds behind her teammate in 29th place (1:55.17). First-year Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) was the final point scorer for the women with a 42nd place finish (1:57.59).
The Bobcats Nordic and alpine teams finished in seventh place out of 13 teams with 528.5 points. The Bobcats finished ahead of Colby College (493.5) and just behind St. Lawrence University (541).
The Bobcats next compete at the Williams Winter Carnival on February 19th and 20th.
Heldman raced back into the top-ten with a vengeance, after a few disappointing races during the past few carnivals. Heldman tied Dartmouth skier Braden Long for fifth place out of 51 skiers, with a combined time of 1:31.97, in the men's slalom.
Manter continued his impressive and consistent skiing this season with an 11th place finish, with a combined time of 1:32.56. Canney was the final point scorer for the men, with a 24th place finish (1:36.64).
Junior Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) finished 19th out of 45 racers, with a combined time of 1:46.23, to lead the Bobcat women in the slalom. Forbes and Livingston rounded out the top three finishers for Bates, finishing in 28th and 38th place respectively.
