Heldman races to a 10th-place finish at Williams Carnival





HANCOCK, Mass. -- The Bates alpine skiers competed in the slalom today in the final day of the Williams Winter Carnival.

After an impressive 18th-place finish in the giant slalom yesterday, sophomore Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) tied for 10th-place in the slalom out of 42 racers. Heldman tied St. Michael's skier Braden Harden, with both skiers finishing with a combined time of 1:29.59.

Sophomore Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) skied one of his best races of the season placing 20th, with a combined time of 1:30.86. Senior John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) finished in 26th-place with a combined time of 1:33.00, to round out the top three finishers for the Bobcat men.

On the women's side, first-year Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) led the way in the slalom with a 30th-place finish out of 47 skiers, with a combined time of 1:37.9. Fellow first-year Caitlin Forbes (Hanover, Maine) was next for the Bobcats in 35th-place, with a combined time of 1:38.90. Junior Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) was the final point scorer for Bates in 40th-place, with a combined time of 1:48.07.

The combined Bates alpine and Nordic teams finished in seventh place out of 12 teams with 502.0 points. The Bobcats held on to a slight lead over St. Lawrence University, who finished the carnival with 496.0 points.

Bates junior captain Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) and teammate Heldman  finished only .2 seconds apart in the giant slalom at the Williams Winter Carnival. Manter was the first finisher for the Bobcats in 15th place out of 51 racers, with a combined time of 1:40.54. Heldman placed 18th, with a time of 1:40.74. Junior Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) was the final point scorer for the men in 37th place, with a time of 1:44.97.

The women's alpine team also took on the giant slalom today and was led by Holland, who secured 21st place out of 42 skiers, with a combined time of 1:48.03. Sophomore Kristen Waddle (Harpswell, Maine) was less than a second behind Holland placing 27th, with a time of 1:48.77. Forbes was the final finisher for Bates in 41st, with a time of 2:06.89.
