Manter claims sixth place in the slalom at the UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. -- The men's alpine ski team had three finishers in the top twenty in the slalom at the UVM Winter Carnival on Saturday. Junior captain Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) had his best finish of the season, racing to a tremendous sixth place finish out of 38 competitors, with a combined run time of 1:40.40. Sophomore Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) was next for the Bobcats in 14th place (1:42.14), followed closely by junior teammate Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) in 18th place (1:42.88).

Two first-year skiers led the Bobcat women's alpine team in the slalom on the final day of the UVM Carnival. Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) was the first Bobcat to finish earning 17th place out of 41 racers, with a combined time of 1:48.30. A little more than a second behind Livingston was Caitlin Forbes (Hanover, Maine) in 21st place, with a combined time of 1:49.94.

The Bates alpine and Nordic teams finished the weekend in 8th place out of 13 teams with 486 points. The Bobcats return to the mountain February 12-13, at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival in Hanover, N.H.

Manter continued his solid racing this season, leading the Bobcat men with a 22nd place finish (2:04.17) out of 50 skiers in the giant slalom. In a little more than a second behind Manter, sophomore Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) secured a 28th place finish with a combined run time of 2:05.44. Rounding out the top three for the Bobcats was senior John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.), scoring his first points of the season with a 35th place finish (2:07.29).

On the women's side, Bates junior Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) was the top Bates finisher once again. Holland recorded a 26th place finish out of 43 competitors in the giant slalom, with a combined run time of 2:10.66. Forbes was right behind her teammate in 30th with a combined time of 2:13.67. Unfortunately, the remaining two racers for the women did not finish leaving Bates with only two point scorers in the event.
