Men's alpine ties Dartmouth for fifth place in slalom

LYME CENTER, N.H. -- Senior Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) placed 13th out of 60 competitors for the second straight day, leading the Bates men's alpine ski team to a tie for fifth place out of 10 teams in the slalom at the Dartmouth Carnival, held at Dartmouth Skiway.

Manter's two runs totaled 1:40.22. Junior Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) came in 15th, just a hair behind Manter at 1:40.34, for his fifth top-15 performance of the season. Senior Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) took 24th place, at 1:43.38, helping the Bobcats tie Dartmouth with 77 points in the event.

Two-time NCAA Championship participant Micaela Holland '11 (Belmont, Mass.) led the Bates women in the slalom with a time of 1:47.90, good for 22nd place out of 53, just ahead of first-year Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine), who was 23rd in 1:48.24. First-year Kelly Mackenzie (Alta, Wyo.) placed 32nd in 1:54.12.

Bates' Nordic and alpine teams combined to score team 513 points, good for a seventh-place finish out of 12 teams at the Dartmouth Carnival. The Bobcats compete next weekend at the Middlebury Carnival, the last carnival before Bates hosts the NCAA Eastern Region Championships Feb. 26-27 at Sunday River (alpine) and Black Mountain (Nordic).

Manter placed 13th out of 60 skiers to lead the Bates men's alpine ski team to take fifth place out of 10 teams in the giant slalom on Friday at the Dartmouth Carnival.

Manter's second run of 56.67 seconds was the third fastest of the day, and gave him a two-run combined time of 1:56.37. Senior John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) tied for 15th place, his season high, in 1:56.40 and Heldman rounded out the scoring in 20th place at 1:57.97. The Bates trio's 79 points put Bates one ahead of Colby for fifth place, trailing only Vermont, Middlebury, New Hampshire and Dartmouth. Also competing for Bates were junior Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) in 27th, first-year Coleman Lieb (Ray Brook, N.Y.) in a tie for 29th and Brockman in 46th.

Mackenzie led the Bates women by placing 28th out of 53 racers in the women's GS, with a combined time of 2:03.12. Sophomore Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) was 32nd in 2:03.58 and Rockwell was 34th in 2:04.56.
