NEWRY, Maine — Bates first-year Emily Hayes came in fifth place among 74 competitors in the women's slalom, while senior captain Alex Jones posted his second straight top-15 finish in the men's slalom on Saturday, as the Bates Carnival concluded with slalom races at Sunday River.
Hayes (Natick, Mass.) had the fourth-fastest second run in the field, at 54.80 seconds, for a two-run combined time of 1:47.44. Junior captain Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) tied for 20th place at 1:54.08.
Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), an NCAA Championship qualifier last year, recorded the ninth-fastest first run of the day at 52.60 seconds and finished with a combined time of 1:50.16, a day after placing 13th in the giant slalom. Jones took 15th place among 81 competitors. Sophomore Coleman Lieb (Ray Brook, N.Y.) was second on the Bobcats, finishing 29th overall at 1:55.16; first-year Peter Cole (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) was 41st in 1:58.97.
Bates' alpine and Nordic ski teams combined to finish seventh among 15 teams at the Bates Carnival.
First-year Avril Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished ninth out of 66 competitors in her first EISA carnival event on Friday, as the Bates Carnival began with giant slaloms.
Dunleavy had the best two-run combined time of any Division III athlete, at 2:35.33. Fellow rookies Hayes and Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) rounded out the scoring in 25th and 26th places, respectively, at 2:38.96 and 2:39.96, and junior captain Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) was right behind in 27th at 2:40.49.
For the Bates men’s team, Jones came in 13th out of 65 men with a combined time of 2:31.59, ahead of all but two other Division III skiers. First-year Brent Talbott (Menlo Park, Calif.) came in 39th in 2:39.74.
The EISA carnival season resumes next weekend with the UNH Carnival at Attitash.
