MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- First-year Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) had her best carnival races to date, finishing eighth among 69 skiers to lead the Bates alpine ski team in the giant slaloms at the NCAA East Region Championship on Saturday.
Fitzpatrick raised her standing for a bid in the NCAA Ski Championships in two weeks, recording the third-fastest second run in the field, at 1:03.05, for a two-run combined time of 2:07.27. Fellow rookies Avril Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Emily Hayes (Natick, Mass.) placed 16th and 21st, respectively, in 2:08.41 and 2:08.84. Dunleavy finished the carnival season ranked 11th in the East in combined NCAA rankings, while Hayes finished 13th, and both are assured of spots at NCAAs.
Sophomore Coleman Lieb (Ray Brook, N.Y.) led the Bates men in 44th place out of 73 skiers in 2:05.02, followed closely by first-year Peter Cole (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) in 46th at 2:05.52. Senior Josh Fancy (Anson, Maine) rounded out the scoring in 61st place at 2:10.41.
Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished eighth out of 16 teams at the East Championships.
Emily Hayes placed seventh out of 68 competitors in Friday in the slalom portion of the NCAA East Region Championship, leading the Bates women's alpine team to fifth place out of 13 squads.
Hayes had two outstanding runs for a combined time of 1:40.16. Sophomore Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) posted another strong slalom outing, taking 14th place in 1:41.04. Katie Fitzpatrick placed 25th in 1:42.93.
Senior Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) led the men's team in 37th place out of 73 competitors, in a two-run combined time of 1:41.70. Cole came in 46th in 1:44.80, and Fancy finished 51st in 1:52.32..
