Dunleavy ninth in giant slalom at Middlebury Carnival

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Bates alpine ski team placed three women among the top 25, led by sophomore Avril Dunleavy's ninth-place finish, as the Middlebury Carnival concluded with giant slalom races Saturday at Middlebury Snow Bowl.

Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) had a two-run combined time of 2:11.72 for her fifth top-10 carnival finish this season. Sophomore Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) placed 22nd out of 62 skiers in 2:13.95, and junior Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) followed up Friday's fourth-place finish in the slalom by taking 25th place in the GS at 2:14.39.

First-year Chris Bradbury (Norwich, Conn.) placed 43rd in the men's GS for the Bobcats.

Bates' combined Nordic and alpine ski teams scored 400 points to finish eighth out of 16 teams at Middlebury, where the NCAA Championships will take place in three weeks. The Bobcats will wrap up the EISA carnival season by hosting the NCAA East Region Championships next weekend, Feb. 22-23, at Black Mountain in Rumford (Nordic) and Sunday River in Newry (alpine).

On Sunday, the alpine team returns to Dartmouth Skiway to compete in slalom races that were postponed at last weekend’s Dartmouth Carnival. The results will count toward NCAA Championship qualifying.

Friday Recap

Rockwell finished a career-best fourth on Friday in the women’s slalom portion of the Middlebury Carnival. She had the eighth-fastest first run of the day, at 50.69 seconds, and followed up with the fourth-fastest second run of the day, for a blazing combined time of 1:40.81. Padding another 1.36 seconds to her time would still have kept Rockwell within the top 10 finishers among the 63 competitors in the event.

Sophomore Emily Bamford (East Melbourne, Australia) placed 19th overall in 1:43.68, the only other Bates woman to complete two runs on the day, causing the Bobcats to settle for the seventh-most carnival points out of 13 women’s squads on the day. The Bates men’s squad was less fortunate, with only first-year Tanner Dirstine (Boise, Idaho) scoring carnival points, taking 32nd place in 1:42.90.
