Dunleavy places fifth in GS at NCAA East Regionals

NEWRY, Maine -- Bates sophomore Avril Dunleavy claimed fifth place out of 80 competitors in the women's giant slalom on Friday, as the Bates Carnival and NCAA East Regional Championships got under way at Sunday River.

Heading into Saturday's action in the final carnival of the EISA circuit this season, Bates' combined ski teams stand in sixth place among 16 teams, with 249 points, one point ahead of Colby.

Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) had the eighth-fastest first run in the field, at 1:21.06, and followed that with the fourth-fastest second run, at 1:19.60, for a combined time of 2:40.66.

Sophomore Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) placed 16th in 2:42.70, and sophomore Emily Bamford (East Melbourne, Australia) gave Bates three women in the top 20, in 20th place at 2:42.70, as the Bobcats placed fourth among women's squads in the event. Senior captain Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) placed 22nd in 2:43.49.

The Bates men's team saw first-years Chris Bradbury (Norwich, Conn.) and Tanner Dirstine (Boise, Idaho) placed 38th and 39th among 85 men, respectively, in 2:40.81 and 2:40.97, while first-year Cody Bullen (Newry, Maine) took 42nd place in 2:41.38 to round out Bates' scoring.

Slalom races culminate the alpine portion of the EISA carnival season on Saturday morning.
