CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine -- Bates sophomore Avril Dunleavy finished fourth out of 64 competitors in the women's giant slalom on Friday, as the Colby Carnival got under way at Sugarloaf Mountain.
Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) was eighth after her first run of 53.42 seconds, then rose to fourth, her career-best in the GS thus far, with the second-fastest second run in the field, 53.60 seconds.
Sophomore Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) placed 15th in 1:49.41, and junior Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) finished 24th in 1:51.36 to round out the scoring for the Bates women, who were fourth among 13 squads in the event.
Junior Matt Perejda (Newry, Maine) led the Bates men, placing 41st out of 68 in 1:48.47. Sophomore Peter Cole (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) took 43rd in 1:49.27.
Alpine teams compete in the slalom on Saturday at Sugarloaf, while the Nordic portion of the carnival begins at Quarry Road Recreation Area in Waterville.
