Women's alpine impressive in slalom at UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. -- The Bates women's alpine ski team placed three competitors among the top 13 collegians on Saturday in the slalom portion of the UVM Carnival at Mt. Mansfield, leading the Bobcat alpine team to a strong second day of the season-opening carnival.

Sophomore standout Avril Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) made up for Friday's DNF in the giant slalom with two strong runs, going 54.68 in the first run and 59.41 in the conditions-worsened second for a combined time of 1:54.09, good for seventh among collegiate women.

Junior Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) and sophomore Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) were close behind Dunleavy in 10th and 13th at 1:54.92 and 1:55.36, respectively. Sophomores Emily Hayes (Natick, Mass.) and Emily Bamford (East Melbourne, Australia) were 17th and 18th, one of the squad's finest one-day performances in recent years.

Junior Ryan Symancek (Brodheadsville, Pa.) led the men's squad on Day 2 of the carnival, placed 23rd among collegiate men in 2:02.98. First-years Tanner Dirstine (Boise, Idaho) Chris Bradbury (Norwich, Conn.) scored carnival points for the second time in as many days, placing 29th and 30th at 2:11.56 and 2:14.47, respectively.

As a team, Bates stands eighth among 13 competing teams with 232 points, not far behind seventh-place Williams (250). The UVM Carnival's Nordic portion will take place Feb. 2-3 at Trapp Family Lodge. Next weekend both teams will compete at the St. Lawrence Carnival in Lake Placid, N.Y. -- alpine at Whiteface Mountain and Nordic at Mt. Van Hovenburg.
