LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Sophomores Emily Hayes and Emily Bamford placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the women's giant slalom to lead the Bates alpine ski team to a strong first day of the St. Lawrence Carnival at Whiteface Mountain.

Women's alpine tied for third place among 13 squads in the GS with the University of New Hampshire, with 83 points.

Both Hayes (Natick, Mass.) and Bamford (East Melbourne, Australia) were consistently excellent in their two runs. Hayes went 1:03.67 and 1:03.28 for a combined time of 2:06.95, while Bamford was only .10 seconds behind total, with runs of 1:03.06 and 1:03.99. Senior captain Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) came in 30th (2:11.22) among the 65 competitors to round out Bates' scoring.

As with last week's GS at the UVM Carnival, the Bates men's squad saw three freshmen take care of the point-scoring. Chris Bradbury (Norwich, Conn.) led the way in 25th place among 59 competitors, in 2:03.38. Tanner Dirstine (Boise, Idaho) was 27th in 2:03.85 and Cody Bullen (Newry, Maine) was 44th in 2:09.54.
