FARMINGTON, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team split a non-league doubleheader at UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday at Hippach Field. The Bobcats' comeback bid fell just short in Game 1 in a 6-5 loss, but Bates took the nightcap by a 13-3 score.

The Beavers (9-17) took a 6-0 lead through four innings in the first game off of Bates junior starter Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.).

Bates (5-19) began mounting a comeback with individual runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including a leadoff home run by junior Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) in the sixth, Hood's third of the season. Junior Brian Mahoney's (Sudbury, Mass.) RBI single scored senior Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.) in the fifth.

With junior reliever Simon Griesbach (West Bend, Wis.) holding the Beavers scoreless over his 2 1/3 innings, Bates plated three runs in the seventh, getting three of their nine hits in the game, including an RBI single by junior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.), and taking advantage of three errors. Bates left two men on base when Beavers reliever Brian Morrison shut the door with a one-out save.

Bates sophomore lefthander Larry Hinkle (Arlington, Va.) earned his first collegiate victory in Game 2, going five innings and limiting the Beavers to three runs on two hits and six walks. Junior Ralph Vitti (Winchester, Mass.) and first-year Ryan Horvath (Fort Myers, Fla.) both tossed shutout innings in relief.

Bates rang out 16 hits and tied a season high with 13 runs against three UMF pitchers, including sophomore Matt Devin's (Bridgewater, Mass.) first collegiate home run, a two-run shot during the team's five-run fifth inning.

Mahoney added a two-run double in the fifth -- one of two doubles for him and five for the Bobcats in the game -- and was 3-4 at the plate with three runs and two RBIs in the game. Junior Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) went 2-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in Bates' four-run third inning.

Bates plays a nine-inning game at Colby on Wednesday, beginning at 4 p.m.
