WATERVILLE, Maine -- Robert Tourek (Wexform, Pa.) drove in Ken Kaufman (Lexington, Mass.) with the game-winning run as the Colby College baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 13-12 win over Bates College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday at Coombs Field.
Colby (3-13, 1-5 NESCAC) scored eight runs over the final three innings to come back from an 11-5 deficit.
The two teams combined for 39 hits and 13 extra-base hits. Bates (2-12, 0-7 NESCAC) had 20 hits, the team's highest since getting 21 against Fisher College on May 12, 2005. The Bobcats also hit eight doubles in the game.
The Mules started the ninth inning with three straight singles by Kyle McKay (Bedford, N.H.), Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.) and Ryan Conlon (Ridgefield, Conn.), who had an RBI single to bring in McKay with the tying run. After John Murphy (Hingham, Mass.) lined into a double play, Tourek hit the game-winning single to center field to score pinch-runner Kaufman.
Sam Kennedy-Smith (Newton, Mass.) entered the game in the eighth inning and earned the victory for Colby.
Tom Salemy (Odessa, Fla.) had a three-run homer in the seventh inning as Colby fought back with four runs to make it 11-9. Bates added a lone run in the top of the eighth inning to get the score to 12-9, but the Mules added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to one run.
McKay had four hits, including a triple, to lead the Mules. Craig Cooper (Trumbull, Conn.) had a pair of doubles among his three hits and Salemy also had three hits.
Bates junior Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) and first-year Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine) both had four hits out of the Bobcats' 20 total hits. Hood and junior Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.) both had two doubles. Junior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) had three hits, while juniors Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) and Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) both had two hits.
