Baseball team sweeps host UMaine-Farmington

Sean VanderVliet '08 raised his record to 4-3 with a complete-game victory, his second this season.

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Bates first-year 3B Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) homered for the second straight day as the Bobcats baseball team swept a non-league doubleheader at UMaine-Farmington on Thursday, 5-3 in Game 1 and 19-6 in Game 2. Farmington finished its season at 5-22; Bates improved to 12-20 and is scheduled to host Middlebury College in a non-league game on Friday.

In the opener, the Bobcats used a three-run sixth inning to pull away from the Beavers. The frame was highlighted by a two-run double from senior LF Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.).

Senior righthander Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) grabbed the win for Bates. VanderVliet scattered eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts in a complete-game effort, raising his record to 4-3 this season.

Senior 1B Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) rapped a pair singles for the Bobcats.

Dan Hemdal struck out five and walked two in 5.1 innings of work for Farmington. Kyle Feltis hurled 1.2 innings of one-hit ball in relief.

VanderVliet took a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning, but the Beavers tried to make a game of it, as a Corey Provencher sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Josh Garneau cut the lead to 5-3, but the Bobcats staved off the rally for the win. Provencher collected a pair of singles and two RBIs in the game.

In the second game, the Bobcats pounded out 21 hits in rolling past Farmington.

First-year C Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) led the charge for Bates in his biggest day at the plate this season, with two singles, a double, a home run and five RBIs. In his last five games, Webb is 11-21 (.524) with two homers, 8 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

Senior Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) also drove in five runs with two singles and a double. With 47 hits this season, Mahoney is one away from matching his own Bates single-season record from 2006. Hood was 3-3 with three RBIs, and Simon clubbed a two-run home run, his third of the season and second in two days.

First-year RHP Paul Chiampa (Bryantville, Mass.) notched the win for Bates with a six-inning performance, including a walk and two strikeouts, to raise his record to 2-2.

Brian Morrison went four innings in the losing effort with a walk and five strikeouts.

Farmington's Mitch Bean clubbed his first career collegiate home run -- a three-run blast -- to cap a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
