Heide pitches complete-game win as baseball splits at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team rode a complete game win from first-year pitcher Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) in Game 1 and had its ninth-inning comeback fall short in Game 2 as the Bobcats split a NESCAC East Division doubleheader at Colby on Saturday. Bates took the first game 7-2 but fell 9-8 in the nightcap.

John LaMantia had three hits and scored twice as the Colby for a 9-8 victory over Bates College in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Coombs Field.

Spencer Jacobson (Newton, Mass.) also had three hits and scored once for Colby in the second game. Jacobson and Chris Murdock (Briarcliff Manor scored runs in the eighth inning to give the Mules a 9-5 lead. Kyle McKay (Bedford, N.H.) drove in three runs and scored twice for the Mules, while Colin Riggs (Duxbury, Mass.) scored a pair of runs.

Bates (6-16, 2-7 NESCAC East) had scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning. Senior Robert Patton (Darien, Conn.) had an RBI single in the inning. The Bobcats then made things interesting with three runs in the top of the ninth before Colby reliever Ryan Murphy (Mansfield, Mass.) closed the game out with his second save of the season.

Senior Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) had three hits in the nightcap for Bates, while sophomore Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) and senior Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) each had two.

Justin Clark (Brunswick, Maine) worked six-plus innings for the Mules to earn the second game win.

Heide allowed seven hits over seven innings in the opener for Bates. Patton had a solo home run in the second inning, while the Bobcats got two hits apiece from Beaton, senior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.), and first-year Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.).

Colby (12-11, 2-6 NESCAC East) got a pair of hits from Craig Cooper (Trumbull, Conn.) and LaMantia doubled and got on base three times.

Bates will host Emerson College in a non-conference doubleheader Monday, starting at 1 p.m.
